On May 1st, the Hui proudly hosted a webinar training on maternal mental health led by neonatalogist Dr. Connie Andrejko. This engaging and informative session offered a comprehensive overview of some health problems seen in newborns and ways healthcare providers can support new parents as they take their child home for the first time.
When prompted on what she hopes participants take away from her training, Connie responded “You are not alone.” New parents can seek support from their healthcare team, and healthcare professionals can confer with each other across networks and disciplines to provide the best care for newborns and their families. Here are some key takeaways from the training:
1. Strengthen Discharge Education for Newborn Care
- Ensure every caregiver receives clear, structured discharge instructions covering: when to seek medical attention, the importance of follow-up appointments for abnormal or incomplete newborn screens, and contact information for urgent vs. non-urgent concerns.
2. Screen and Support Perinatal Mental Health
- Implement routine screening protocols for peripartum depression and anxiety during prenatal and postpartum visits. Train staff to differentiate “baby blues” from clinical depression or anxiety. Develop clear referral pathways to mental health services and community support, including access to therapy and psychiatric consultation.
3. Strengthen Breastfeeding Support
- Start breastfeeding support during antenatal care by discussing realistic expectations and benefits. Provide hands-on help with mechanical pumping, hand expression, and flange fitting. Ensure access to lactation consultants before discharge. Share evidence-based resources for medication and substance safety during lactation. Advocate for hospital practices that avoid formula promotion and support milk expression early and frequently.
We want to give another big mahalo to Connie! If you’d like to watch the training in full, you can find the recording linked here and down below.
